War In Iraq
The war in Iraq was immoral and illegal. I opposed it at the time, and subsequent events have proved that I was right. There were no weapons of mass destruction, and this war has not made the world in the slightest bit safer.
The Environment
People who don’t believe in global warming are deluding themselves and others. I believe that there is a problem and that we all (not just some or some countries) need to take urgent action to stop it. This may involve global action, or action in your own home. We all need to play a part.
Identity Cards
I am opposed to these. I believe that they will infringe on the freedoms that we have traditionally enjoyed, but they will not make any significant difference in the fight against crime. They will cost a lot of money, which would be better spent on providing more police officers.
University Tuition Fees
These make higher education the exclusive ground of the rich and put many potential students off applying for universities. It is wrong that we should say to students that they should begin their working lives already £20,000 or more in debt.
Council Tax
This is one of the most unfair taxes about. I want to see it abolished. It affects the poorest in our society the worst. I am delighted that since the Liberal Democrats entered a partnership to run Broxtowe we have always ensured that council tax rises have been very low, but it would be better for it to be abolished altogether.
Education
Proper investment in education is important for the future of the country, but it is equally important that we allow teachers to get on and do their jobs. Many teachers have turned their back on the profession because of the amount of paperwork involved, and I want to see this stop.
The National Health Service
There are no quick fixes for the NHS, but this flagship of the UK is still something for us to be proud of. I want to see resources applied fairly and properly, to end the post code lottery about treatment and to ensure that everyone in Britain enjoys the best possible health care.
The Tram
I believe that the creation of a fast, efficient and clean public transport system is essential to the future prosperity of Nottingham, and I therefore support the development of the line through Beeston and Chilwell. I am however totally opposed to the delays caused over the past few years, which have had serious implications for people living along the route, and have campaigned for these to be brought to an end.
